Madine's Foray into the World of Traveller Wedding Dresses

Thelma Madine began working more and more with Travellers when she got a flood of inquiries about three Gone With the Wind-style dresses she designed and displayed in her stall. At first, the dresses were for children, but eventually, clients requested wedding dresses as well, not to mention coordinated apparel for large bridesmaid parties.

Most of the styles Madine developed (20-foot trains, fairy lights embedded into skirts, Swarovki crystals) were at the request of clients, hence Madine's work is more a manifestation of subcultural trends than couture-style trend setting. This client-request-driven system of dressmaking is more reminiscent of eighteenth century fashion culture than that of modern times.

The hippy culture was also visible through the fusion of folk music with the blues, folk and psychedelic rock music.

Skirts that formed a part of the 1960s' hippy clothing were colorful, flared and funky. If you wish to don the hippy look today, you can go in for long and flowing skirts that help to unleash your wild side. Look for skirts made in corduroys with contrasting colors. Roman Clothing - Clothing for Men and Roman Sumptuary Laws

The ordinary clothing for men were the toga and the tunic. The tunic was an undergarment which was put on (put on) whereas the toga was considered an outer garment which was wrapped around (amictus). There were several different types of toga and each type conveyed a specific purpose and symbolism. There were specific laws called Roman Sumptuary Laws which dictated which type of clothes could be worn by Romans. Clothing for men and women were very similar. The toga was at first worn by women as well as men, but later married women wore a different robe, called a stola, which had a broad border or fringe, reaching to the feet. Prostitutes and women condemned for adultery, were not permitted to wear the stola. Unlike the toga worn by the men the stola only conveyed the marital status of the woman. The stola was a symbol of marriage publicly proclaiming her respectability and adherence to traditions. The stola did not indicate the social class of women.

Luxury materials were imported by the Romans from their provinces and other far off lands. The range of colors of clothing were produced by complicated dyeing processes. Expensive fabrics were imported from abroad and the dyes used for coloring these clothes were equally as expensive. Purple was the most expensive color to produce which is why it was only worn by the emperors. The colors, materials and fabrics which Romans were allowed to wear were dictated by the Sumptuary Laws. A vestitor or, in Latin, vestio, was charged with making clothing.

The toga was a loose outer garment without sleeves generally made from a woollen cloth and draped gracefully and precisely around the body. The color of the toga was normally white, except in case of mourning, when a black or dark colored toga was worn. The toga picta or toga palmata was a toga with a gold border which was only permitted to be worn by generals during their triumphs. The toga symbolised a garment of peace because soldiers did not wear the toga. The toga is such an important item of clothing that it is immediately associated with the Romans. The history of the Gothic clothing is basically based on the two periods of the Gothic era-the early Gothic period and the late Gothic period. The early Gothic period saw more elegant and sophisticated styles of dressing. Sleeves became tight and the forearms got prominence. The early Gothic period also saw minimal trimmings on the Gothic dresses. The necklines went deep and the Gothic dresses became longer.

The gothic clothing styles changed during the late Gothic periods with the fabrics looking stiffer in their appearance. Here the draperies shortened considerably and women wore their hair long with different headgears such as the wimple, which would cover the head and the gorget, which was used to cover the neck. The men had short hairstyles and there was more emphasis on the detailing of the upper silhouette.

Gothic fashion would always show the major use of reds, blues, greens and gold. The vermilion shade also was highlighted during the Gothic period. The gothic clothing also has interesting elements fused in their design. Here are a few:

Cote-hardie-This is a short A shaped garment which opens in the center and has buttons down on the front.
