If you come to think of it, hippy culture and hippy clothing have been a part of our lifestyle in some way or the other. Hippie culture was a phenomenon that began in the 1960s in the United States. It was originally a youth movement that slowly became a cultural revolution. The hippie culture was a very independent kind of movement. Here, the hippies tried to free themselves from social restriction. They wanted to choose their own way in life and find their own meaning of the varied philosophies. Being a part of the hippy culture was considered 'cool' and 'in' for many. Hippy clothing therefore reflects this kind of thinking through the styles and cuts of the fabrics that are used. IThese 1960 Hippie pictures will help to give you a clearer idea of the kind of clothes that were used.

The 1960s' hippy clothing started a phenomenon that is still inspiring designers to incorporate it in their designer wear. Besides, these are also popular with most youngsters. Hippy clothes have always inspired me in quite a few ways and my days in high school were spent in trying to create hippy clothing at home.

Hippy clothes are always easy to distinguish because they include brightly colored fabrics with unusual styles and patterns; long flared skirts, bell-bottom pants, tie and dye garments, peasant-style tops and many, many more. These kinds of clothing were usually available in local flea markets and sometimes even in second hand shops. Till date, some of my favorite items of hippy clothing have come from the local flea markets at the Anjuna Beach in Goa, India. Such flea markets have assorted options of long flared skirts, footwear and bags that can help you get the hippie look. The hippy culture was also visible through the fusion of folk music with the blues, folk and psychedelic rock music.

Skirts that formed a part of the 1960s' hippy clothing were colorful, flared and funky. If you wish to don the hippy look today, you can go in for long and flowing skirts that help to unleash your wild side. Look for skirts made in corduroys with contrasting colors. Some of the skirts are available in 3 tiers with floral prints and appliqué work. Patches of cloth that have varied prints can be stitched together to make a beautiful hippy skirt. When worn with peasant tops these can look really chic. If you wish to tone down the flamboyance of the skirt, then go in for a plain white peasant top to play down the colors.

Accessories were also an important part of hippy clothing. The bags were generally made from cotton fabrics in shades of plum, browns, reds or earthy tones. Some of them had vintage motifs as well. Men, as well as women also loved to accessorize the hippy look with Native American jewelry, colorful head scarves, headbands and long beaded necklaces.

Pants with decorative side panels in vibrant patterns were also popular. These had a freaky yet cool look, which most hippies could identify with. Ladies also sportedhooded dresses. These dresses were such where the bodice and the hood were lined and were long and flowing with long sleeves and loud colors.

If you are really fascinated with hippy clothes and want to get these into your wardrobe, here are a few tips that you can use. You can go in for some of the following options.

Men can go in for leather vests and sport long hair and beards. Both of which need to be unkempt for that perfect look.

For women, teaming micro minis with chains is one of the best ensemble options.

A peace symbol locket. Most people who belong to this movement do not always practice the use of drugs. Neo-hippies are those people who are the children or grandchildren of the original hippies. Well, whatever controversies may be associated with this culture, hippy clothes sure are one of my favorites and I think it's time I shopped for some as well. Peace to all beings on Earth.

Medieval Clothing

The History of Medieval Clothing and Clothing Sumptuary Laws

The history of Middle Ages clothing provides details of the Sumptuary Laws and an overview of fashion through the ages of the period. The Sumptuary Laws distinguished seven social categories and made members of each class easily distinguished by their clothing. The female clothing of the time consisted of two tunics, the under one being longer but less capacious than the other. Women also wore a long cloak over their clothing and closed shoes, which had then begun to be made pointed. During the period of 1200 - 1300 luxury was at its height when gold and silver, pearls and precious stones were lavished on clothing. During the period of 1300 - 1400 Women's coats and surcoats often trailed on the ground. Hats consisted of a frame of wirework covered over with stuff which was embroidered or trimmed with lace. During the period of 1400 - 1500 the women wore long trains to their dresses which were eventually shortened. Sleeves became long, hanging and embroidered or fringed. Fashion dictated that women's dresses and clothing became shorter and were trimmed in the most costly manner.

Medieval Clothing in Europe

Amongst European nations, during the Medival times of the Middle Ages, there was always one common standard of fashion and clothing , which varied from time to time according to the particular custom of each country, and according to the peculiarities of each race. Each European country would imitate the fashions and clothes of another but still manage to retain its own identity. In Italy, for instance, clothes and dress always maintained a certain character of grandeur, ever recalling the fact that the influence of antiquity was not quite lost. In Germany and Switzerland, clothing and garments had generally a heavy and massive appearance; in Holland, still more so. England uniformly studied a kind of instinctive elegance and propriety in clothes. It is a curious fact that Spain invariably partook of the heaviness of clothing peculiar to Germany because the Gothic element still prevailed there. The tunic was an undergarment which was put on (put on) whereas the toga was considered an outer garment which was wrapped around (amictus). There were several different types of toga and each type conveyed a specific purpose and symbolism. There were specific laws called Roman Sumptuary Laws which dictated which type of clothes could be worn by Romans. This included the types of material and fabrics, the style of the clothes and the color that people were allowed to wear. Only the Emperor was allowed to wear a toga which was entirely colored in purple. The clothes that men wore therefore immediately reflected their status in society.

Roman Clothing - Clothing for Women, the Stola

Clothing for men and women were very similar. The toga was at first worn by women as well as men, but later married women wore a different robe, called a stola, which had a broad border or fringe, reaching to the feet. Prostitutes and women condemned for adultery, were not permitted to wear the stola. Unlike the toga worn by the men the stola only conveyed the marital status of the woman. The stola was a symbol of marriage publicly proclaiming her respectability and adherence to traditions. The stola did not indicate the social class of women.

Roman Clothing - Materials, colors and Fabrics

The manufacture of Clothing Materials and fabrics changed as the Romans became more powerful and came into contact with other cultures. Luxury materials were imported by the Romans from their provinces and other far off lands. Fine linen material from Egypt, cotton fabrics from India and silk from China which was quite rare and extremely expensive. The range of colors of clothing were produced by complicated dyeing processes. Expensive fabrics were imported from abroad and the dyes used for coloring these clothes were equally as expensive. Purple was the most expensive color to produce which is why it was only worn by the emperors. The colors, materials and fabrics which Romans were allowed to wear were dictated by the Sumptuary Laws. A vestitor or, in Latin, vestio, was charged with making clothing.

Roman Clothing - The Toga, How to make a Toga and hosting a Toga Party

The toga was a loose outer garment without sleeves generally made from a woollen cloth and draped gracefully and precisely around the body. The color of the toga was normally white, except in case of mourning, when a black or dark colored toga was worn. The toga picta or toga palmata was a toga with a gold border which was only permitted to be worn by generals during their triumphs. The toga symbolised a garment of peace because soldiers did not wear the toga. The toga is such an important item of clothing that it is immediately associated with the Romans. It is remembered today when people host a toga party during these events the whole theme of the Romans is taken into account with making Toga Party decorations, sending toga party invitations and creating a toga party menu.

Roman Clothing - The Tunic

The tunic was a white woollen vest worn below the toga, coming down a little below the knees before, and to the middle of the leg behind, at first without sleeves. Tunics were fastened by a girdle or belt about the waist, to keep it tight, which also served as a purse. Both men and women wore a tunic. The colored broad stripes or bands on a Roman tunic was called latus clavus. The width and color of the bands indicated the status of the wearer.
Roman Clothing - Trousers

The Romans initially wore neither trousers, socks nor breeches, but used sometimes to wrap their legs and thighs with pieces of cloth. This later changed in the period of the Empire when soldiers wore trousers or breeches, especially in the colder climates of the northern provinces.

Roman Clothing - Shoes, Sandals and Boots

The chief coverings for the feet were the calceus, which covered the whole foot or the solea, a slipper or sandal which covered only the sole of the foot, and was fastened on with leather thongs or strings. The shoes of the senators came up to the middle of their legs, and had a golden or silver crescent on the top of the foot. The shoes or shoes of the Roman soldiers were called caligæ, sometimes the boots were shod with nails.
Roman Clothing and Hairstyles

The hairstyles of Roman men changed with the fashions of the time which were often dictated by the Emperor. The men were known to wear wigs, dye their hair and use curling tongs to produce a curled effect. Women wore elaborately curled hairstyles. Hair was also arranged in layers, twisted, waved and curled. Ringlets were created which fell to the sides and the backs of the head. Wigs and hair pieces were used to create an illusion of abundant hair.

Gladiator Clothing and Gladiator Sandals

The protective clothing worn by the Roman gladiators were designed in many different styles and forms. Descriptions of their armor, helmets, shield, weapons and clothing for each type of gladiator are described. Basic, cheap woollen tunics (tunica) and cloaks were worn by gladiators when they were not in the arena. Gladiators were allowed to keep the rewards earned by winning gladiator combats and were able to buy expensive clothing which would be worn at public banquets. The materials used to make Gladiator Sandals was predominantly leather. The Ancient Romans were expert in the process of tanning and produced both supple leather which was ideal for making gladiator sandals and tough leather which was used to make protective armor.

Roman Clothing - Roman Clothing

Interesting facts and information about the different types and colors of the clothing worn by the Romans who lived in Ancient Rome and visited places of spectacle and entertainment like the Colosseum. The early Gothic period saw more elegant and sophisticated styles of dressing. Sleeves became tight and the forearms got prominence. The early Gothic period also saw minimal trimmings on the Gothic dresses. The necklines went deep and the Gothic dresses became longer.

The gothic clothing styles changed during the late Gothic periods with the fabrics looking stiffer in their appearance. Here the draperies shortened considerably and women wore their hair long with different headgears such as the wimple, which would cover the head and the gorget, which was used to cover the neck. The men had short hairstyles and there was more emphasis on the detailing of the upper silhouette.

Gothic fashion would always show the major use of reds, blues, greens and gold. The vermilion shade also was highlighted during the Gothic period. The gothic clothing also has interesting elements fused in their design. Here are a few:

Cote-hardie-This is a short A shaped garment which opens in the center and has buttons down on the front. Women who generally wore the cote-hardie had it tight-fitting especially around the shoulder, hips and waist area. This generally ends at the hips in such cases and can be laced up at the front or back.

Pourpoint-This was generally worn under the cote-hardie. The pourpoint is a short jacket with tight sleeves. It was even lined with fur to provide warmth. The pourpoint was also known as the paltock.

Houppelande-This was a long garment that was mainly worn by men in the Gothic period. This Gothic costume was fitted at the shoulders and was worn with a belt at the waistline. It was also worn with a stand collar with long decorative sleeves. The sleeves had slits at the elbows for the hand to pass. The remaining portion of the sleeve used to dangle below.

Surcote-The surcote was generally a traditional dress for women. These were also available in various versions. Sometimes, such Gothic dresses were also known as the sideless gowns. This was because the woman's gown was cut away from the arms to the hips. This would reveal the cote hardie that was worn below.

Ways to incorporate Gothic clothing in your wardrobe:

Girls, get yourself pointy toed shoes or combat boots.

Gothic costumes can also incorporate lot of velvet and long flowing skirts.

Go in for well-fitted corset tops.

Use bold make up for eyes and lips.

Men can go in for loads of black in the wardrobe. Since then, fashion and fashion culture have entered common Chinese people's life. As a part of western culture, a series of fashionable western garments, like the continuous wind, are changing the image of Chinese costumes gradually.

Since the end of 1970s, besides asking tailors to make their clothes, people have started to purchase ready-made clothes. Clothes processing industry developed quickly along with the open door policy and reform. There are more and more clothes brands, design and colors in the market. People believe more and more in the quality and taste represented by the brand clothes. Taking examples of several types of popular clothes, it is not difficult to see how Chinese blend in the world fashion in dressing.

Bell pants are also called bell-bottomed pants. This kind of trousers has short crotch, thin and tight cut in hip and thigh part. From the knee part, the legs of trousers are widened and loosened, making the trousers look like bell shape. Originally it was a kind of sailor clothes. Loosening the trousers legs was to cover the rubber boots, which was to prevent seawater or deck cleaning water being poured into the boots.

Bell-bottomed trousers originally were American decadent style clothes, popular from the end of 1960s to the end of 1970s.
